Newton-And-Apple-TreeLegend has it that a young Isaac Newton was sitting under an apple tree when he was bonked on the head by a falling piece of fruit, a 17th-century “aha moment” that prompted him to suddenly come up with his law of gravity. I guess apples have more to do with Physics than any other fruit.

When it comes to biology or health, yes, an apple day can keep the doctor away, and here’s why:

Researchers at the University of Western Australia (UWA), School of Medicine and Pharmacology found that eating an apple a day can lower the risk of dying by 35% as compared to those who do not. Even just 100g of the fruit per day, will improve life expectancy.



They contain high levels of fiber, essential for healthy digestion. One apple contains 21% of the fiber you need in a day. This also translates to 5.4g. Two-thirds of this fiber, along with most of the vitamins in apples is stored in the peels. So, if you are snacking, DON’T peel the apples. You’ll miss out on the benefits, including lowering blood pressure and digestive system regularity.

Apples contain high levels of boron, up to 2.5mg of boron an apple. The National Institute of Health says that we only need 1 to 3mg of boron per day, in order to increase the brain’s functions.

Along with boron, apples contain a special anti-oxidant called quercetin. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says that quercetin is shown to advance brain function and lower the risk of Parkinson’s disease.


A study done at the University of Rio de Janeiro found that people who eat 3 apples per day as part of their diet, lose almost twice the amount of weight as those who ate other fruits for daily snacks.
